Introduction
Komatsu South Africa is looking for a skilled and experienced Senior Officer: Health & Safety to join their Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) team. Based at the head office in Germiston, this critical role supports the organization’s commitment to legal compliance, operational safety, and excellence in the mining and construction industries.
What the Job Is About
This position involves overseeing and maintaining Komatsu’s SHE system. You will be responsible for coordinating compliance inspections, managing safety training, investigating incidents, supporting audits, and implementing strategic health and safety initiatives. You will also act as a trusted advisor on SHE matters to operational teams.
Who Should Apply
Ideal candidates must have:
- An NQF Level 5 safety qualification (e.g., SAMTRAC, SHEMTRAC, SHEMBA, etc.)
- Experience with internal auditing for ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 standards
- Train the Trainer certification (advantageous)
- Minimum 6 years of health and safety experience in mining or construction
- Legal knowledge of OHS Act, MHSA, and industry-specific regulations
Skills Requirements
- Competency in Root Cause Analysis and incident investigation
- Experience in Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
- Familiarity with SABS/SANS standards and compliance protocols
- Computer skills: Intermediate MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- First Aid Level 2 certification
Job Responsibilities
- Conducts safety inspections and audits against job risk profiles
- Develops and updates safe working procedures
- Leads safety training and fire drill scheduling
- Implements safety programs and SHE awareness campaigns
- Investigates SHE incidents and recommends preventive measures
- Supports disciplinary processes related to safety issues
- Monitors the use of correct PPE and safety gear across field teams
- Completes and submits monthly reports and compliance documentation
