Introduction
This 12-month Industrial Engineering internship, offered through the Yes4Youth programme, provides an incredible hands-on learning opportunity for young South Africans. Based in Durban, this role supports the Industrial Engineer in driving improvements across a manufacturing facility, helping reduce waste, boost productivity, and optimise processes.
What the Job Is About
As the Industrial Engineering Intern, you will assist in executing continuous improvement projects and lean manufacturing initiatives. You'll work closely with the production, maintenance, and quality teams while gaining practical exposure to real-world industrial engineering tasks. From conducting time studies and compiling production reports to participating in Kaizen events and process audits, this role is designed to build both your technical and soft skills.
Who Should Apply
- South African citizens between 18 and 34 years old
- Currently unemployed
- Recently completed a relevant engineering or manufacturing qualification (preferably Industrial Engineering)
- Reside in the greater eThekwini area or KwaZulu-Natal
- Willing to commit to the full 12-month Yes4Youth internship
Skills Requirements
- Strong maths skills and high attention to detail
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and show initiative
- A desire to learn and engage in a fast-paced setting
- Basic knowledge of lean principles, Six Sigma, or process improvement is a bonus
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in Kaizen activities and promoting a culture of continuous improvement
- Monitor and track Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and other key manufacturing metrics
- Support plant expansion projects and production layout improvements
- Create and disseminate production reports on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
- Conduct data collection and analysis related to downtime, energy use, and efficiency
- Participate in problem-solving activities like 5 Whys and Root Cause Analysis
- Support setup of SOPs and help with workflow analysis
- Document observations from Gemba Walks and ensure follow-ups
