Chief Safety Officer – Ivanhoe Mines (Mokopane, Limpopo)
Introduction
Ivanplats, a subsidiary of Ivanhoe Mines, is seeking a highly experienced Chief Safety Officer to lead and manage the health and safety operations at its state-of-the-art underground mining project near Mokopane, Limpopo. This role is key to ensuring compliance with mining safety regulations and fostering a strong safety culture across the operation.
About the Role
The Chief Safety Officer (CSO) will oversee all safety-related activities, ensuring regulatory compliance and the implementation of safety and risk management initiatives. This role involves planning, monitoring, and reporting on safety performance, conducting inspections and investigations, and providing expert guidance to improve operational safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with Sect 22 and 23 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
- Oversee the Responsibility Assignment Matrix (RAM) and inspection schedules.
- Conduct incident and accident trend analysis and develop mitigation strategies.
- Lead investigations and remedial action plans for safety incidents.
- Provide expert safety advice to the operation and manage the annual safety budget.
- Engage stakeholders on safety matters and maintain effective communication systems.
- Identify and rank safety risks and ensure integration with the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program.
- Prepare monthly mandatory reports for submission to the Group Safety Lead.
Skills & Requirements
- Grade 12 and tertiary qualification in Occupational Safety, Risk, or Engineering Management
- Project management and auditor certification
- Incident investigation skills (ICAM/RCAT/SCAT)
- Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Valid driver’s license
- 10 years mining experience, including 5 years as a Chief Safety Officer
- Experience in emergency preparedness, risk management, and HSEQ audits
- Strong leadership, planning, and communication skills
