Role Overview

The General Assistant will play a key role in supporting the truck operator and the blasting team. The position involves collecting products from silos, delivering them to the blasting face, and ensuring all operational areas—including vehicles and refilling zones—are maintained to BME’s safety and operational standards. This is an essential entry-level position within the mining and blasting sector, offering candidates valuable exposure to hands-on fieldwork and safety-driven mining practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the MMU (Mobile Manufacturing Unit) with charging up blast holes and refilling products as per operational requirements.
  • Perform risk assessments and safe work declarations with the blaster before starting work.
  • Help prepare the blasting and charge-up areas in compliance with legal, client, and BME standards.
  • Work alongside the blaster to inspect sites, determine target blocks, and plan the blasting process.
  • Measure and map blast holes to ensure accuracy and adherence to design parameters.
  • Collect and prepare accessories, detonators, and boosters for priming blast holes according to the blast plan.
  • Maintain housekeeping in the vehicle, refilling station, and all work areas.
  • Report any deviations or risks immediately to supervisors and take corrective action as required.
  • Perform additional ad hoc duties within specified timeframes as directed by supervisors.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Matric / Grade 12 with Mathematics (compulsory).
  • At least 1 year of experience in a mining or blasting environment.
  • 1 year experience as a Blasting Assistant preferred.
  • Advantageous qualifications: Code B or EC driver’s licence, Competent A & MQA Blasting Assistant certificate.
