The ideal candidate will have between 2 to 4 years of experience in health and safety operations and a strong understanding of South African Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations. Job Purpose

The primary purpose of the Safety Representative is to promote and maintain a safe working environment by identifying potential hazards, preventing workplace accidents, and ensuring full compliance with OHS legislation and company safety standards. The role requires proactive engagement with both employees and management to ensure all safety protocols are consistently implemented and upheld.

This position reports directly to the Operations Department and serves as the key liaison between workers and management on all matters related to health, safety, and environmental compliance.

Key Responsibilities

1. Hazard Identification & Risk Management

  • Conduct regular safety inspections across manufacturing and production areas.
  • Identify, document, and report unsafe conditions, at-risk behaviors, or equipment hazards.
  • Participate in risk assessments and ensure the implementation of corrective and preventive control measures.
  • Assist management in monitoring safety programs and compliance performance metrics.

2. Incident Investigation & Reporting

  • Investigate and document all workplace incidents, near-misses, and injuries.
  • Determine root causes and support management in developing and implementing corrective actions.
  • Prepare formal safety incident reports in compliance with internal policies and OHS Act requirements.
  • Ensure all investigation outcomes are communicated to relevant departments for ongoing improvement.

3. Health & Safety Compliance

  • Monitor compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act 85 of 1993) and other applicable legislation.
  • Ensure ongoing alignment with ISO 45001 health and safety management standards.
  • Participate in internal and external safety audits and inspections.
  • Accompany inspectors from the Department of Labour or other authorities during compliance audits.

4. Training & Communication

  • Promote a safety-first mindset by conducting awareness sessions, safety inductions, and toolbox talks.
  • Communicate health and safety concerns between employees and management clearly and effectively.
  • Assist in developing and implementing safety campaigns to reinforce organizational safety culture.
  • Provide input for safety newsletters, posters, and internal communications related to workplace safety.

5. Record Keeping & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate safety records, incident reports, inspection logs, and training registers.
  • Assist in compiling monthly safety performance reports for management review.
  • Track corrective and preventive action completion and provide progress updates during safety meetings.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: Grade 12 / Matric (essential).
  • Certification: Health and Safety Representative Certificate or equivalent qualification (required).
  • Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with the OHS Act, ISO 45001 standards, and workplace safety procedures.
  • Other: Clean criminal record and valid South African identification.
