About the Role
The Artisan (Engineering) – Diesel Mechanic is responsible for maintaining the City’s fleet and mechanical plants, ensuring they remain operational and safe. The role involves preventive and predictive maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical faults, and coordinating maintenance activities to meet operational requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret and coordinate site and pre-work requirements, guiding support personnel under the supervisor’s instruction.
- Maintain diesel/petrol-driven mechanical plants and vehicles, checking hydraulic systems and reporting any malfunctions.
- Drive and test vehicles to assess operational functionality and safety.
- Diagnose faults through visual inspection and mechanical investigation, then perform repairs.
- Replace defective parts with reconditioned or new components, ensuring correct functionality.
- Perform risk assessments and comply with all health, safety, and statutory requirements.
- Stand in for Specialist Engineering Artisan during their absence.
- Ensure all work permits and lockout procedures are adhered to before starting tasks.
Requirements
- Trade Tested Artisan in Diesel, Petrol, or Earthmoving Mechanic disciplines.
- Minimum of 1–2 years post-apprenticeship experience in mechanical maintenance.
- Valid Code B/EB driver’s license.
- Code 10/C1 driver’s license with PrDP (added advantage).
- Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in sewer environments.
- Willingness to work overtime and in all weather conditions.
