Position Overview

The Health and Safety Officer will play a pivotal role in ensuring that all Freedom Stationery Group operations comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, ISO 9001 standards, and internal company policies. The officer will be responsible for identifying potential hazards, implementing preventative measures, and promoting a culture of safety among all employees. This position is office-based with regular site inspections and occasional travel between company locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies and procedures in line with the Health and Safety Act.
  • Conduct regular workplace inspections and safety audits, identify deviations, and recommend corrective actions to management.
  • Compile and communicate risk assessments and safe working procedures, ensuring employees understand potential hazards.
  • Investigate workplace incidents and injuries, prepare detailed reports, and implement corrective and preventative measures.
  • Facilitate Health and Safety Committee meetings, record minutes, and distribute information to relevant stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and monitor safety-related training programs, including first aid, firefighting, and emergency preparedness.
  • Organize and conduct fire drills and emergency evacuation procedures to ensure employee readiness.
  • Oversee site security operations, including surveillance monitoring, theft prevention, and incident reporting.
  • Maintain accurate records of incident reports, safety inspections, and safety equipment issuance.
  • Enforce compliance with company policies and legislative requirements, recommending disciplinary measures if necessary.
  • Promote good housekeeping practices and ensure safety signage is properly displayed and maintained.
  • Serve as on-site emergency coordinator during workplace incidents.
  • Support Health and Safety Representatives in conducting monthly inspections of their designated areas.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 Quality Management System requirements.

Qualifications and Experience

  • National Diploma or equivalent qualification in Occupational Health and Safety (SHEQ).
  • SAMTRAC or equivalent certification advantageous.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Solid understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related legislation.
  • Experience in security monitoring and incident investigation preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Valid driver’s license with willingness to travel between company sites.
  • Residency within the Durban area is required.
