Are you a South African matriculant looking to start a hands-on career in mechanical work? AFGRI is offering an exciting 3-year apprenticeship program for individuals who want to become Tractor Mechanics or Earthmoving Mechanics. This is your chance to receive in-service training, develop technical skills, and build a long-term career in the agriculture and mechanical industry.

What Is the AFGRI Apprenticeship?

This is a full-time training opportunity for South African matriculants. If you are not a matriculant, you can apply when the general advert opens in August or September.

During the 3-year apprenticeship, you will be trained to become a qualified Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanic. This includes classroom learning, practical experience, and training from top brands like John Deere.

What Training Is Included?

  • 6-month probation period to evaluate fit for the program
  • Practical training at a training institute
  • Distance learning for N-level subjects (if needed and available)
  • Saturday classes may be required
  • Product-specific training from suppliers and AFGRI specialists
  • No cost for training, unless a subject is failed, which must then be redone at the apprentice’s own expense

If you qualify within 3 years, you will enter a work-back period to repay training through service. Early withdrawal may result in repayment of training costs.

Apprentice Job Duties

  • Learn to repair and maintain tractors and earthmoving equipment
  • Assist with stock control
  • Provide customer service
  • Perform general tasks in the workshop
  • Develop administrative and technical skills

Requirements to Apply

Must-Have:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Good communication and administrative skills
  • Basic computer skills

Academic Requirements (Choose One Path):

Path 1: N2 Qualification with These Subjects:

  • Mathematics
  • Engineering Science
  • Diesel Trade Theory
  • One of the following:
    • Industrial Electronics
    • Engineering Drawing / Technical Drawing
    • Motor Trade Theory

OR

Path 2: Matric Certificate With These Subjects Passed:

  • Mathematics (Not Mathematical Literacy)
  • Technical Mathematics
  • Physical Science
  • Technical Science
  • Engineering Graphics and Design

Note: As part of the programme, AFGRI may assist you in studying for these subjects if you lack N2.
