Position Purpose
The main reason for this job role is to help keep the port area safe and clean. This role also helps improve the movement of goods and cargo. As a Port Worker, you will work under the guidance of your supervisor to ensure that tasks are completed properly.
Position Results
As a Port Worker, your duties will include:
Cleaning of Equipment: You will be responsible for cleaning various types of equipment. This includes washing the windows of cranes and cleaning the cabins where the crane operators work. Keeping these areas clean ensures safety and efficiency.
Inspecting Containers: You will check the condition of shipping containers to make sure they are safe to use. You will also monitor "Reefer" operations. Reefer containers are refrigerated and are used for transporting perishable goods. It's important to ensure they are working properly.
Handling Rail Cars: You will open and close the locks on rail cars. This is a crucial task to ensure that cargo can be loaded and unloaded safely.
Loading and Unloading Cargo: You will be involved in loading and unloading cargo from ships and trucks. This must be done according to standard procedures to ensure everything is handled safely.
Tarping and Untarping: When necessary, you will cover and uncover loads with tarps to protect them from the weather.
Managing Dunnage: Dunnage is material used to protect cargo during transport. You will either place or remove dunnage as needed.
Cleaning Work Areas: You will clean various operational areas. This includes rail trucks, machinery, workshops, offices, storage sheds, and restrooms. Keeping these areas clean is important for everyone’s safety and comfort.
Completing Documentation: You will fill out important documents, such as accident reports. This documentation helps ensure workplace safety.
Identifying Equipment: You will need to know which cargo handling equipment is appropriate for the tasks at hand. This helps in preventing accidents and ensuring efficiency.
Qualifications and Experience
To qualify for this position, you need:
Education:
- Grade 12/NQF 04: At least 1 year of relevant experience.
- Grade 10/NQF 02: At least 2 years of relevant experience.
Skills:
- You should have knowledge of terminal operations and safety protocols.
- It is important to be careful and tidy in your work to maintain a safe environment.
