Position Overview

The University of Johannesburg is seeking 18 Security Officers for its Protection Services. The role is responsible for safeguarding the property, staff, students, and visitors at various UJ campuses. This position involves various duties aimed at maintaining security and enforcing safety protocols on the premises. Security Officers will ensure the safety and well-being of everyone on the university grounds, reporting and handling emergency situations, and taking action when necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Security Services:

    • Patrol University premises to prevent security breaches.
    • Protect UJ assets, property, staff, students, and visitors.
    • Ensure security infrastructure like gates and street lights are functioning and report defects.
    • Respond to incidents, secure crime scenes, and complete incident reports.
  2. Access Control:

    • Monitor access points and enforce entry rules.
    • Check permits and verify access for staff, students, visitors, and vehicles.
    • Perform bag and vehicle searches as needed.
  3. Customer Services:

    • Offer friendly and efficient security services to staff, students, and visitors.
    • Assist with events and emergencies as directed by senior officers.
    • Provide an excellent level of service to maintain a positive image of the University.
  4. Health and Safety:

    • Respond to emergency situations such as fires or medical incidents.
    • Operate security and protective equipment while following departmental procedures.
  5. Professional Development:

    • Attend required training and adhere to instructions from senior personnel.

Minimum Requirements

  • Matriculation, Grade 12, and NQF Level 4 certification
  • Valid Grade C PSIRA Registration
  • Basic Computer Literacy (Microsoft Office)
  • Clearance Record from SAPS
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in security services
  • Physical, medical, and psychological fitness for the position

Preferred Qualifications

  • NQF5 qualification or higher
  • Experience in electronic access control and video management systems
  • Experience in campus or corporate security environments
  • Professional drivers' permit (PDP)
  • Higher PSIRA grades (e.g. Grade A or B, Armed Reaction)
  • SAPS Firearm Competency Certificate
  • Training or experience in firefighting and first aid

Working Conditions

  • Shift work (24/7/365), including weekdays, nights, and alternating shifts.
  • Possible travel or work between various sites.
  • Uniform required and work in all weather conditions.
  • Firearm may be required based on operational needs.

Screening Requirements

All recommended candidates must undergo a pre-selection programme, which may include:

  • Screening by MIE, SAPS, or SSA
  • Pre-appointment medical tests
  • Polygraph test
  • Psychometric test
  • Physical and mental fitness assessments
